“It was time for a facelift. The Apostolic Church had been in
Lurgan since the 1930s and we felt it was time to change our name
to reflect the changes that have taken place within our church,”
explained the church’s Welsh pastor, Marcus Thomas. “But although
we have changed our name, we haven’t changed our beliefs and we
are still part of the worldwide fellowship of Apostolic Churches.”
“We’re located in Bridge Street and that’s one of the reasons we
wanted to use the word ‘bridge’ in our name. But more importantly,
we want to be a ‘bridge’ to point people from all communities to
Jesus.”
"It
was something that the leadership team had thought about for a
while. We were looking for a name which expressed something about
who we are and why we exist.
"The
name 'church' was felt to be important. We are a group of people
who honour God. While the word 'church' speaks of people being
called out by God, we didn't want the idea to be given that we are
separate from people. The word 'community' expresses our desire to
be involved in the community. This is a big challenge we face - to
be relevant and supportive of the community around Bridge Street.
"The
word 'bridge' is linked to the street that the church building is
in but also, we want to be a bridge for people to find God through
His Son, Jesus Christ.
